Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a reliable and cost-effective device to deliver power from a UPS system, generator, or utility source to multiple equipment by a single input with multiple output outlets. Rack mount power strip is the most basic PDU. They both supply power to the cabinet. But they have some differences. What’s the differences of upgraded PDU vs power strip? Continue to read this article.

What Is PDU

A PDU is a device fitted with multiple outlets. A PDU delivers AC power from power source to severs. PDU can be installed into a big cabinet with a power cord to transmit electric power to the computers and networking equipment located within a data center. Power cord can power a network device or connect to the PDU and computer in a data rack or network wiring closet. And C13 power cord is the best choice for PDU. In general, PDU is developing all the time. In the beginning, PDU is a simply and cheap rack mount power strip and then become larger floor mount PDUs with multiple functions.

Basic Introduction of Power Strip

Rack mount power strip is an electronic device that makes it possible for people to charge multiple electronic device at the same time. Power strip which we can also call it power bar or power board is a device with a block of charging stations. Power strip is often connected with the end of a flexible cable(a mains pug) and then you can plug it into the wall or other place. It has a long power cord that can be used anywhere. It is extremely convenient.

The Difference Between PDU and Power Strip

Application area

PDU can be installed in equipment racks which keep power within reach of rack mounted devices like severs, switches, routers, or cooling fans. The installation of PDU is more flexible and convenient which can be suitable for customer who is very strict about it. And PDUs are often used in data center, network closets and industrial environments. In addition, PDU can be for in-depth power management and monitoring. Power strip are widely used both at home and office for audio, video, computer system, appliances, lights, business and other appliances.

Electricity Consumption

Compared with power strip, PDU is designed more reasonable. It has more strict quality and standard. PDU can work over a long time without any problem. If you use PDU for a long time, you never worry about heat.

Safety

PDU has fundamentally eliminated the potential safety problems such as frequent power failure, burnout and fire caused by poor contact and low load. While a power strip fails to contribute functions what PDU can.

Conclusion

From this article, we know the basic knowledge about the PDU and rack mount power strip. Each kind of PDU can help data centers to improve monitoring and reduce operation costs. To choose basic PDU or other types of PDU, it totally depends on your own needs. If you want to purchase PDU, you can visit FS.COM.

As we all know, Cisco switches and fiber optic transceivers are considered as the benchmarks of the market. With the development of optical transceiver, Cisco has built a system to name each transceiver. For example, we often find Cisco C-class 10G transceiver like SFP-10G-LR. But there are S-class transceivers like SFP-10G-LR-S. You may be confused about their difference. That is why you should read this article. I will show you both of them and then make a comparison between SFP-10G-LR-S and SFP-10G-LR.

Basic Knowledge About SFP-10G-LR-S

SFP-10G-LR-S transceiver provides 10GBase-LR throughput up to 10 km over single mode fiber at a wavelength of 1310 nm using an LC duplex patch cable. SFP-10G-LR-S can be applied in enterprise and data center in which don’t require very long distance, temperature tolerances, or other special conditions. SFP-10G-LR-S can also support DOM which can help the administrator to monitor and make feedback of the operation of transceivers, including the temperature, the bias current of the laser diode and so on.

SFP-10G-LR-S

An Introduction of SFP-10G-LR

SFP-10G-LR transceiver is an LC duplex SFP+ transceiver for optical communications, rated for distances up to 10 km and a maximum bandwidth of 10Gbps. “LR” means long distance. The SFP-10G-LR transceiver operates at 1310nm wavelength. It can also support DOM, which is the same as SFP-10G-LR-S. DOM can provide more convenience for monitoring and operating as mentioned before.

SFP-10G-LR

SFP-10G-LR-S vs SFP-10G-LR

From their appearance and definition, SFP-10G-LR-S and SFP-10G-LR may be the same, but actually they have some differences in their protocols, temperatures and price.

Protocol

SFP-10G-LR can support three protocols including Ethernet, OTN(Optical Transport Network) and WAN-PHY(Wide Area Network Physics). However, SFP-10G-LR-S can just support Ethernet protocol. In addition, SFP-10G-LR-S does not have TAA compliance.

Temperature Range

SFP-10G-LR-S and SFP-10G-LR transceivers have different temperature ranges. But the operating temperature range of SFP-10G-LR-S is smaller, so SFP-10G-LR-S is better for shorter transmission distance applications than SFP-10G-LR. If you design a project for an enterprise or data center environment that does not need too long distance, temperature tolerances, or other special request, SFP-10G-LR-S should be just fine for you.

Price

Compared with SFP-10G-LR, SFP-10G-LR-S doesn't have too many specials. And the performance of SFP-10G-LR-S are no better than that of SFP-10G-LR. But why do so many people insist to select SFP-10G-LR-S? This is because SFP-10G-LR-S has lower prices.

Conclusion

From this this article, we know that SFP-10G-LR is different from SFP-10G-LR-S in the sides of protocols, temperature ranges and price. Except the C-class and S-class SFP+ transceivers introduced in this article, there are still SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-SR-S transceiver. With the development of fiber optic transceiver, SFP transceiver have been occupying a big share in the market. SFP transceiver which is a compact, hot-pluggable optical transceiver is known as small form-factor pluggable or mini GBIC (gigabit interface converter). It is widely used for both telecommunication and data communications applications. This article will introduce one type of SFP—RJ45 SFP and take a comparison between RJ45 SFP and optical SFP.

An Introduction of RJ45 SFP

RJ45 SFP is a high performance integrated duplex data link for bi-directional communication over Category 5 copper cable. It is fully complied with the SFP Multi-Sourcing Agreement (MSA), IEEE802.3u and IEEE802.3ab. The specification of RJ45 SFP has been optimized to save more port power. And then, we will talk its feature and some applications after these basic introduction.

RJ45 SFP

The Feature and Application of RJ45 SFP

The maximal cable distance is 100m and its maximal data rate can be up to 1000Mbps. Then it has low power dissipation. And its commercial temperature ranges from 0°C to +70°C. The compatibility with existing structured cabling devices and existing low-speed devices of RJ45 SFP makes it uniquely suited for widespread deployment of Gigabit Ethernet. Broad deployment on RJ45 SFP will simplify data center infrastructures, making it easier to manage server and storage connectivity. At last, the shell of it is fully metallic which can protect it from EMI. It can be applied in networking switches and routers.

RJ45 SFP VS Optical SFP

In this paragraph, we will make a comparison between RJ45 SFP and optical SFP. The two kinds of SFPs have some similarities. The maximal data rate of RJ45 SFP can reach up to 1000Mbps which is the same as optical SFP and there is no difference for the operating temperature of RJ45 SFP and optical SFP. Except that, they have some differences.

At first, the RJ45 SFP interfaced with RJ45 connector operates on standard Cat5 unshielded twisted-pair copper cabling. The maximal cable distance of RJ45 SFP is up to 100m. And the maximal cable distance of optical SFP is longer than RJ45 SFP which can be up to 10km or more over duplex LC fiber patch cable. Since optical SFP offers different wavelengths and optical power budget to allow more longer distance. If we want longer transmission distance, we can choose optical SFP rather than RJ45 SFP. From this point, optical SFP offers the substantial advantages over RJ45 SFP. Secondly, when we turn to the security, optical SFP is safer than RJ45 SFP. Because fiber does not conduct electricity. Finally, the price of RJ45 SFP is more expensive than optical SFP.

Conclusion

We can have a general understanding of RJ45 SFP after this article. Comparing RJ45 SFP VS optical SFP, we can see that each technology has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. From the introduction of their transmission distance, operating temperature, security and price, you must get the idea of how to choose a suitable one.
